Center of Fort Weyr's Bowl (#971J)
Grey volcanic cliffs tower neckbreakingly steep to all sides of this gigantic
ovoid that is Fort's Bowl, creating a vast haven--stretching over three
thousand feet to the northeast and to the southwest--from the full impact of
the cutting mountain winds. To the northeast, dominating the rest of the
mountain range, looms the immensity of Tooth Crag; to the southwest, beyond
the lake, the crumpled rim reminds of a catastrophe from ages past.
The airspace above is comparatively crowded, whether by wings or singletons;
likewise, the packed earth and rock that grounds the Bowl sees virtually
constant activity, particularly just to the east where the living caverns
lie. Along the northern curve yawns the hatching grounds, and the lingering
reek of blood on the western breeze is a tell-tale pointer to the feeding
pens.
It is a fall afternoon. Strong winds pierce the clear sky.
IRajath and L'ryl have decided to get out of the barracks once more together
and this time it's right smack in the middle of the center bowl that they
have plopped themselves down. Nestled up against the side of his blue
lifemate, L'ryl hunkers over a piece of hide that he's busy making marks
upon. "This will be so great once we get it built. We won't have to worry
about learning to fly before having fun."
Madri was en route back to the barracks from a meeting when she spies an
all-too familiar pair hunkered down in the bowl's center. Gaze narrows more
out of curiousity than suspicion and as of yet their words haven't touched
upon her hearing. She'll saunter up to them casually and peer first at the
growing blue, then towards his companion. "Irajath. L'ryl. What are you to
doing out here?"
L'ryl continues to scribble a little on the hide before looking up at the
voice, hands moving to try and cover up his work. "We're just taking a break
and working on some studying." L'ryl answers quickly, Irajath rumbling his
own version to Madri as well. "Is everything alright?"
"Oh? What are you studying?" The Weyrlingmaster peers down eagerly. Whenever
one of her charges has taken it upon themselves to study, she's all for
supporting them. Gaze takes in the concealed work and she motions, "I could
probably go over what you are doing and give you a hand?" Good thing Elsveth
isn't about, she's generally less inclined to ... "Alright? Why yes, I think
so." The question catches her off guard and she pauses, "Why? Do I look okay?"
L'ryl smiles as he nods his head towards Madri before glancing to Irajath. A
silent exchange goes on between the two for a moment before they both give
another nod and L'ryl looks back to Madri. "Well, it's a little bit of a
Smithing experiment. I'm working on a way of getting the dragons into the
water of the lake so they can have more fun."
Okay so her eyebrow will go up with that one, but she's amused and motions to
his work. "Oh? Well, as long as it's safe..." If even it works... Madri
kneels down and motions, "Show me." She sees no harm in this kind of venture,
she might, even go so far as to bring in a smith for a class or two if the
project warrants it.
L'ryl looks back towards Irajath for just a second before removing his hands
from the hide and showing it over to Madri. On it, two drawing have been
begun. Of of what looks like a hill with a slide on the end with a rough
drawing of a dragon on it sliding down one side and on the other half is a
drawing of what might look like a trebuchet with a dragon drawn on top of it.
All rough drawings. "I know Irajath and some of the other dragosn like to
splash in the water of the lake, this way they'd be able to do it really well
without having to fly."
Madri is no smith so the drawings will look more like drawings then any sort
of formalized plans. She again nods and inspects it more closely, her brown
wrinkling in thought. "It's an interesting idea, although, I think you might
need to make it a little larger to compensate for their size?" She's not sure
though, "And what are you thinking of using to test run this... this.. things
before allowing Irajath in.. ah, on it?" Always thinking safety first, if
even this contraption can be built.
L'ryl smirks as he shakes his head. "We'd only let the young dragons on
either of them. The older ones can always fly to get the good splashes in
the lake. So they wouldn't have to be too big. And we can always use a
herdbeast for a test subject. That way, the dragons can eat it after the
test." Hey, it makes sense to L'ryl, and judging by Irajath's licking of his
mouth, it might have been his idea. The eating part.
Okay so that got Madri grinning and she'll cover it up with a well placed hand
over her mouth. It's an attempt at looking thoughtful really. "Mmmhmm.
Interesting." She's not sure she's liking that herdbeast idea, but at least
the rest is plausible? "Well, let's worry about getting this built first,
then we can figure out test subjects later." Truth is Mads had been vying for
something more like a log or non-living item, but... "Have you figured out
where you're going to get the supplies? And you /are/ doing the rest of your
studies along with this, right?" She'll glance over the lad, wary expression
there.
L'ryl nods hsi head quickly, or maybe a little too quickly. "Of course I am.
Irajath makes sure that i get it done." he answers before motioning back
towards his sketches. "I think the slide would be the easiest one to build.
Then even the larger dragons would be able to use it. And this.." he points
to the other ones, "Would be good and fun for the really young dragons.
Irajath has assured me of that."
Madri would actually agree with the slide option. The more moving parts there
are on something, the more likely it is for something to go wrong. She
glances over the slide and chuckles, "Ay, this one you might need to make it
big enough for some of the adult dragons.." Like Maialeth for example. "An
object like that will be far too irresistable for some. Either that or put up
a sign warning against certain sizes." But then again, some might just ignore
it anyways.
L'ryl nods his head as Irajath leans in to practically place his head in
L'ryl's lap. "Hey, I know I know, it was your idea for the slide! And for
the other!" he gives a roll of his eyes as he pushes Irajath back gently.
"He... just thought this one would help open the oil barrels instead of
having to do it the way we do now."
Having knelt for long enough, Madri draws herself back up and is somewhat
confused in her expression and response to those last words, "Help open the
oil barrels?" She's not sure oiling and sliding into water all in one shot
would be the most effective.
L'ryl shrusg his shoulders before smiling up at Madri. "He's just trying to
get it where we don't have to take too long doing things. You know, we could
takea bath in the lake while oiling at the same time. Not sure how well
it'd work, but maybe they could go down the slide and have the oil on the
slide and then have them splash into the lake. Either way, i think it'd be
fun."
Madri chuckles. "Although I understand the concept, unfortunately some things
just have to take time." This is directed more towards the dragon than to
L'ryl, however it's meant for both. "Stick with the fun part of it for now,
and we'll see what comes of the rest?" She again points towards the hide and
smiles, "I like the idea though, so let me know if you need help with the
supplies." Just not the building. "Maybe see if some of the others would be
interested in helping you?"
Irajath gives a snort as he listens, causing L'ryl to grin even more. "I
don't know how much the others will enjoy having to help build it, but we'll
see." he remarks, then leans back against Irajath more. "Do you really think
we'll be able to build a tall slide for the dragons by the lake?"
"You will so long as you have a senior rider's permission." And really, in
this case the highest possible rank would be her's and evidently she's in the
mood to give permission. In fact she'll even offer a conspiratory wink, "Well
just tell the others the Weyrlingmaster assigned you all a group project and
expects a team effort on it. If any of them give you grief over it, direct
them towards me." She smirks, not expecting to see any visitors any time soon
on this account. "Let me know how it goes and if you need anything else?"
Otherwise, it's looking like she needs to head towards her office.
L'ryl nods his head quickly. "Alright. This'll be great." he states before
looking back towards Irajath once more. Once again it seems the two converse
amongst themselves. "I think we've got it all sorted out, thanks! We'll
definitely let you know if we need anything special though."
With a wave and a laugh she's off, head shaking as she goes. "I look forward
to seeing what comes of this." And truly she is. Once she's back in her
office she'll sribble down a quick note to be handed off to Talia. Where her
queens disappears to is anyone's guess, but if luck is on this weyrling's
side, she might just have sent out a request to Smith to see about enlisting
a little more help in the project.
